Best practices to minimize disconnections on social networks

Most disconnections happen because a social network detects a permissions change, unusual login activity, or a security risk.

Protect your social accounts

Some disconnections are unavoidable, but many can be prevented. Social networks may disconnect accounts when they detect behavior that looks risky. Use these best practices to reduce that risk:

  • Manage permissions in Meta Business Manager: For Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Ads, make sure only the right people have access to pages and ad accounts. Review team roles regularly.

  • Do not share your credentials: Each person should log in with their own account. Social networks may disconnect accounts if they detect logins from different devices, browsers, or locations.

  • Avoid logging in on unknown devices: Public or unfamiliar devices may put your credentials at risk.

  • Avoid multiple IPs: Logging in from distant locations can look suspicious and trigger a disconnection.

  • Enable two-step authentication (2FA): This adds a second security check beyond your password.

  • Manage account contacts: Make sure your team knows who manages the connected account. The person who adds or reconnects the account should keep admin access to the page or profile.

  • Do not revoke app access: If you remove the app from the integrations list in a social network, the account will disconnect. If you need to do this on purpose, see How to revoke access permissions.

  • Review access regularly: Remove people who no longer need access on platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. The user who adds and reconnects these accounts must keep administrator access.

  • Use your real name: On LinkedIn and Facebook, aliases may be flagged as suspicious.

  • Be proactive: If your security policies require password updates, expect the accounts to disconnect after the change and reconnect them right away.
